- On June 18th, I had a text exchange with Charlie Kirk. He said he was spending two full days at the White House trying to persuade President Trump not to initiate a war with Iran. Given that Charlie was close with the President and that he represented a large constituency essential to Trump, and given that many proponents of the war with Iran saw a U.S. attack as urgently necessary to the survival of Israel, it is reasonable to wonder if his refusal to back down from his steadfast opposition somehow resulted in his murder. - US farms are disappearing at an alarming rate: The number of US farms fell -15,000 YoY in 2025, to 1.87 million, the lowest since the 1850s. This marks the 3rd annual decline and the 6th over the last 7 years. Over this period, the number of farms has dropped -158,200, or -8%. At the same time, total farmland has fallen -24.9 million acres, to 874 million, the lowest since the 1910s. Meanwhile, farm bankruptcy filings surged +36% YoY, to 293 in the first 9 months of 2025. - BREAKING: US oil reserves are set to decline by ~41% to their lowest levels since the 1980s after the US announced a 172 million barrel release. This will drop US oil reserves to ~243.4 million barrels, or just ~34% of total capacity. On top of this, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve must keep about 150 million barrels in place to maintain operational flexibility. This leaves just ~93 million barrels available to draw, or less than 5 days worth of the oil supply that normally passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

- Let me offer discussion points on why they decided to bomb Kharg Island. The administration and military planners likely concluded that it would take weeks, if not months, to secure the Strait of Hormuz. During that time, oil prices could rise to levels that would suffocate the global economy. This was unacceptable. They are desperate for immediate action. So, they needed a bold, decisive move to force Iran to relent quickly. Trump was clear. They bombed Iranian military structures on Kharg but left the oil infrastructure unharmed (assuming this is accurate). Recognizing that this could freak out oil markets, they announced it on Friday evening to give markets 48 hours to digest the news. Trump also made it explicit that oil infrastructure would be next if Iran did not allow ships to pass freely through the Strait of Hormuz. In football terms, they're throwing a Hail Mary pass now, hoping it works. They don't have any more time on the clock. Oil markets and the world economy cannot wait weeks or months for the military to open the Strait...
